Reflexology Lymph Drainage (RLD)

A specialised form of reflexology developed by Sally Kay, focused on supporting the body's lymphatic system. Often chosen by clients who have had breast cancer surgery or who are managing secondary lymphoedema.

What RLD is

Reflexology Lymph Drainage, known as RLD, is a specific technique developed by Sally Kay while working with breast cancer patients at a hospital in Wales. It uses a particular sequence of gentle, rhythmic movements on the feet that correspond to the lymphatic system.

RLD is different from general reflexology. The techniques, the sequence, and the intention are distinct, and practitioners need separate, specific training to offer it properly. I trained in RLD directly with Sally Kay.

Who it may help

RLD was originally developed for women who had undergone surgery for breast cancer and were living with, or at risk of, lymphoedema in the arm. Research into the technique has continued since, and it's now chosen by a wider range of clients, including people who:

  • Have had breast cancer surgery, lymph node removal, or radiotherapy
  • Are managing secondary lymphoedema
  • Experience swelling or a feeling of puffiness in the arms, legs, face, or abdomen
  • Want a gentler, more specific alternative to general reflexology

Please note: RLD is a complementary therapy, not a medical treatment. If you are currently in active treatment for cancer or any other serious condition, please speak to your medical team before booking, and let me know when you get in touch so we can discuss whether it's the right time.

What happens in a session

The format is similar to a standard reflexology appointment. We'll begin with a conversation about your history, how you're feeling, and what you're hoping for from the session. If you've had surgery or are managing a specific condition, this conversation matters especially – it helps me tailor the session to you.

You'll settle onto the treatment couch, fully clothed, with just your feet exposed. The RLD technique itself is gentle and rhythmic. It's very different from the firmer pressure some people associate with reflexology, and most clients find it deeply relaxing.

A first appointment is 90 minutes to allow proper time for the consultation. Follow-up sessions are 60 minutes.

My training in RLD

I trained in Reflexology Lymph Drainage directly with Sally Kay, the therapist who developed the technique. This is in addition to my core VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Reflexology and my ten years of practice.

I'm a full member of the Association of Reflexologists (MAR), a member of the Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT), and fully insured. You can read more on the about page.

Frequently asked questions

Is RLD suitable if I've just had surgery?

Timing matters. Please let your medical team know you're considering complementary therapy, and mention it to me when you get in touch. Depending on where you are in your recovery, we can decide together whether it's appropriate now or better to wait.

Will it hurt?

RLD is gentler than standard reflexology. The pressure is light and the movements are rhythmic. It shouldn't be painful. If anything feels too much, just say, and I'll adjust.

Is it a cure for lymphoedema?

No. RLD is a complementary therapy. It's chosen by clients as part of their wider self-care alongside, not instead of, the care provided by their lymphoedema specialist or medical team.

How many sessions will I need?

There's no fixed answer. Some clients come for a short course of four to six weekly sessions, others settle into a longer rhythm of monthly visits. We can talk about what might suit you after your first appointment.

Can I combine RLD with other therapies?

Because RLD is a specific technique with its own intention, it's usually offered as a standalone session rather than combined with other therapies. If you'd like to explore what else might support you, we can talk about it when you get in touch.

I had four sessions of Reflexology Lymph Drainage with Gemma. During each session I felt so very relaxed and comfortable. I was able to totally switch off, shut down and completely relax. The setting in which it all took place is very tranquil and Gemma helped me no end. Her understanding of me and what treatment I needed was second to none.
